How I Used My Blog To Write a Best-Selling Book!

I always wanted to write a book but having a blog made the process easier.

Don’t get me wrong. Blogging can be a lot of work – especially when no one is commenting, sharing, or engaging with your posts. It can be frustrating and make you want to give up. But don’t stop. Blogging can also provide clues into what your next best-selling book could be!

Blogging is what helped me to create my best-selling book “Dividends Are a Queen’s Best Friend” and help women all over the world start earning an extra stream of income from companies we give our money to every day!

Instead of companies profiting from our consumption every day, it was time to show people how to get quarterly income from the multi-billion dollar companies we see every day.

The Beginning of My Blog

Join my Women Who Blog Engagement Group on Facebook if you want to connect with other bloggers and get support.

I released my blog to the public during Women’s History Month (March) in 2018. I was at the Black Enterprise Women of Power Summit surrounded by so many successful women in different industries.

But there was one recurring theme: many women were overworked, underpaid, and not always appreciated.

Here’s another problem I noticed: many women had no idea how to invest and make money beyond their job because they invested their entire lives in getting the education and certifications needed to climb the career ladder.

If women knew the basics of investing and how to make their money work for them, they wouldn’t have to work twice as hard for half as much.

Understand How Your Blog is Bigger than YOU

Knowing how to invest would provide women with more time to focus on health, spend time with family, travel whenever they wanted, and take advantage of an overdue moment of REST.

After all, those were my motivations for learning how to invest. I wanted FREEDOM. You only have one life and you have to do whatever it takes to make it your best life. Investing gave me that freedom.

So, I started my blog based on a NEED. I slowly built an email list so I can share as much as possible about investing.

I exposed more women to the power of dividends. It was time to change the conversation from paying debt to receiving dividends.

Dividends are the “rewards” you get for investing in publicly-traded companies. It’s like the rewards you get when you shop at the store! The more shares of a stock you have, the more dividends you can earn.

This is what women needed. And I wanted to share it without the intimidating lingo. I was on a mission to make shopping at the stock market as simple as shopping at the mall.

Use Your Blog as Market Research

What stories resonate with your target audience? What questions do they have? Use your blog analytics to help you fill in the blanks.

Women loved the dividend blog posts.

After reading my blog posts, people still wanted more. You can only have conversations and meetings with so many people at one time. The best way to spread your message is to write a book.

So I created a female-friendly book that delivered a sip of girl talk and investing information in a way that most people have never heard about before.

I didn’t want to write just another investing book. I wanted to write something that didn’t exist. After the responses I received from my blog posts about helping women to earn another stream of income, I knew I had to release “Dividends Are a Queen’s Best Friend” on Amazon.

One day I woke up and realized that my book was in the Top 100 books for stock market investing on Amazon!

When you work so hard on a project and it finally comes to life, there’s a feeling of alignment and purpose that you get. It’s an amazing feeling!

This is what is possible when you listen to the feedback and solve a problem. Seek to help others by using your gifts.

Reach Out to Multiple Editors

Writing a book won’t happen overnight. But it can happen really quick if you have a team by your side helping you to navigate the process.

When you are looking for people to add to your dream team, think about who your book is intended for. You can have people in your target audience as part of your launch team or make sure you have editors that speak the language of your audience. If one of your editors is a member of your target audience, that’s a slam dunk in the editing process!

Determine Where You Will Sell Your Book

You can sell the book on your website or you can use a third party platform like Amazon KDP.

I set up an account using KDP. It’s the largest marketplace for authors. It was easy to set up the account and you can choose the royalty income structure that works best for you. You can also do pre-orders!

The most important thing you can do is get book reviews. This serves as social proof about the impact of your book. Before people purchase, they want to know what others are saying about the book.

Here’s What Others Are Saying About My Book…

When people are able to do what they once thought was impossible or intimidating because of your book, it makes every late night and sacrifice worth it!

Your goal is to create a piece of work that will get others one step closer to their goals.

  1. This is awesome..thank you for sharing your story. I’m glad that you never gave up and that you continued to press forward in sharing your gift with the world. Yes your book was amazing and I enjoy your blogs of encouragement 😉. I’m in the process of writing my ideas for a book on paper whereas your are teaching women to invest. In my book im aiming to teach people effective money management practices. I was someone who struggled for years due to my poor habits, well eventually I came up with a way to change my poor habits and came up with a process that will hopefully help others effectively manage there finances, keep money in their bank accounts, and be financially free. My target audience my be college students as I also wish to talk about college funding in my book as well as share my experience with college funding…and I also would want my target audience to be those between the ages of 18 to 35. I think the college funding portion of the book would possibly reach those 18-25 and the other sections on money management practices may impact those 25-35 years of age. But I’m working on it! As well as a website too! Thank you for sharing your process!

    • Yes! This is amazing! Congrats! If you want to connect with the college market, you can get bulk orders from colleges and also do speaking engagements. I left my job in 2015, hired an editor, and started working on my book for college students to fund their education. It’s much needed!

  2. Thanks for the reply..You know now that I’m thinking about it I think those between the ages of 16 and 20 or maybe just high school students may be the one’s who I’d want to target..I think my plan works for those who have not already entered college although I do have tips for those who are already in college as well lol but I’m working on it. I appreciate you!

  3. This is inspiring and congrats on your book! I go back and forth about the book idea but turning the blog into a book is a great idea!

  4. So fascinating! Thank you for sharing your success, and congratulations on your book!

  5. What a great post! I appreciate the step by step process and how actionable and applicable it is. I’d love to write a book, but I’ve also decided to start with a blog. I’ll be saving this to reference back to it.

  6. I love your approach to this process. I have also chosen to start in the blogging space before diving into writing a book. It’s such a great way to create a community and conduct market research. I’m already learning so much.

    • Yes! You learn so much from the blogging process. It’s so easy to get writer’s block when writing a book but when you have a blog to reference, it makes everything so much easier. Wishing you the best on your journey!

  7. Yes in the beginning of my blogging journey I too was nervous about putting myself out there. Now I know the power not just in making money with it but reaching many women I wouldn’t have been able to connect if I kept my story to myself. Freedom is always key as it allows us to move the way we choose! Thanks for sharing this it encouraged me!
